A highly qualified media professional, Tanya Snelling (nee Bird) has career experience, which has taken her to the other side of the world and back. She has over 13 years working history in the media industry encompassing newspapers, magazines and most recently public relations. She now has her own public relations consultancy, Strategic PR, however, prior to this she was the managing editor of CityLife Magazines in Cairns, Townsville and Mackay.
Born in Cairns, Tanya gained a Bachelor of Journalism from James Cook University as well as a major in political science before commencing her career at the Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette.
Tanya then headed to London, where she honed her skills as news editor in the field of financial journalism at Mortgage Solutions, London and later International Investment, London. As an international investment editor, she was responsible for sourcing and writing news and analysis for financial professionals with an interest in products and services covering fund launches, banking news, cross-border life-based investment services and the latest regulatory and tax changes facing high-net worth individuals. As well as managing the editorial publishing team, Tanya also spearheaded the launch of financial news websites and daily news service and bulletins.
Her role called for her to chair international conferences including forums in London, Madrid, Frankfurt, Dubai, Sweden, Milan, Jersey and Guernsey, and undertake liaison with government bodies including regulators in the UK and monetary bodies internationally from the Caribbean to the UAE.
Tanya returned home to Cairns and chose to continue her passion for publishing, joining CityLife Magazines as managing editor of the three titles (Cairns, Mackay and Townsville) during a four-year stint which saw the popular lifestyle monthly grow and the parent company launch a second magazine, Style, across the three markets.
Tanya was managing editor of no less than six magazine titles, leading a large team of journalists and freelance contractors and maintaining the brand integrity of both differing publications. During her time in the chair at CityLife, the magazine received many accolades including being recognised as Queensland’s best non-daily publication outside of Brisbane.
Tanya, whose special interests include gardening, fitness and spending time with her family, lives in Cairns with husband Scott and their two young children, Leah and Jesse.
