Port Douglas based Calypso continues to cement its reputation as one of the Far North’s leading reef tour operators with the arrival today of a new, custom-built multi-million dollar vessel. Calypso TEN, aptly named as it is the
10th new vessel the locally owned company has commissioned since 1999, took 15 months to complete by ship builder Gold Coast Ships.
Calypso’s director Graham Jones
said TEN was an important addition to Tropical Journey’s diverse range of tour experiences and has been custom-designed to offer the very best i
n comfort with spacious decks, day-bed style seating and air-conditioned saloons.
One of the biggest in the Tropical Journeys’ fleet, TEN has three decks and is 24 metres long. Receiving a big tick is also its fuel efficiency and motor speed, minimising its impact on the environment while maintaining low passenger numbers.
“Our policy is to keep our vessels up to date with clean, fresh styling, as well as economical, including the latest motor technology.
“The great thing about having new vessels is the ability to offer an incredibly safe, fast and comfortable experience, in keeping with today’s safety codes, which are much stricter today than they used to be.”
This is the third new vessel for Calypso in just over 18 months following the arrival of BUBBLES in September 2013, and BLUE in May 2014.
“TEN has been specifically built to travel the longer distance to Agincourt Reef with the engines we have fitted being designed to travel at a faster speed yet still being fuel efficient,” he added.
Graham said the back deck had been redesigned with more dedicated space for divers. The middle deck is larger, providing undercover seating, outdoor areas and air-conditioned comfort for people to relax in. The top deck has sun lounges for those wanting an open air experience.
“TEN completes our reinvestment program and we can proudly say that we boast the most modern, environmentally efficient and comfortable fleet of vessels in North Queensland.
“There is a lot of depth to the products we offer and we are especially proud to be the only locally owned company to visit Agincourt Reef.”
In addition to Agincourt Reef, Calypso also offers day experiences to Opal and Tongue Reefs as a dedicated snorkel only boat – Calypso Snorkelling. Sister company, Aquarius offers sailing to The Low Isles.
Other tour products owned by the Jones family under Tropical Journeys’ umbrella include Daintree Tours and Escape Charters.
