Give the gift of your wedding dress as the Leukaemia Foundation with the support of Events NQ and the North Queensland Wedding and Formal Expo calls for donations of pre-loved gowns.
From vintage crochet dresses to gorgeous tulle numbers, the Leukaemia Foundation’s wedding dress exhibit has become an annual tradition at the expo, which will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre on Sunday, February 22 from 9am to 5pm.
Leukaemia Foundation spokesperson Annette Jarrett said the exhibit would not be possible without the support of those who had already said “I do” willing to pass on their pre-loved gowns in a true act of generosity.
“This is a wonderful example of our local community giving back to the community. By donating a dress, not only is that person helping to raise much needed funds to support the work of the Leukaemia Foundation, they are also giving someone who may not be able to afford a dress, the chance of their own dream wedding.”
Ms Jarrett said over the last six years more than 600 dresses had been donated and she was hoping for the same level of support this year.
“We normally receive around 100 dresses each year – each of them with their own story. One year, we received a dress that had been crocheted from a pattern in Woman’s Day nearly 40 years ago,” she said.
Ms Jarrett said most of the pre-loved dresses in really good condition would typically sell for around $100 but some of the more unusual older ones may sell for $25.
“One year we even received a dress that was valued at $2500 and had never been worn. This was sold for $500,” Ms Jarrett added.
NQ Wedding Expo event manager Danielle Fischer said the Leukaemia Foundation’s exhibit was just one of the many highlights that can be found at the expo.
“This is the largest event of its kind held outside of Brisbane. There will be featured menu samplings, fashion parades, interactive booths with hair and make up displays, massage, spa treatments and more.”
Ms Fischer said there would be more than 140 exhibitors this year as the expo, which has moved to the Cairns Convention Centre.
Entry is free for early birds, however those wishing to take advantage of this offer need to pre-register for tickets [no charge] online at www.nqweddingexpo.com.
